Laparoscopy operation - Man vs. robots

Laparoscopy operation, as the name suggests, is such a surgery which is done with the help of a telescope inserted inside the patient’s body through a small hole (usually 0.5-1.5 cms). It is also known as ‘bandaid surgery’. It is far better than those operations of earlier times where the body was cut thoroughly and was stitched back again, leaving behind large marks of stitches. Process
Laparoscopy operation involves the use of a laparoscope, which is of two kinds:
-> Telescopic rod lens
-> Digital laparoscope

The former includes the use of a video camera that helps in a clearer vision of the inner body of the patient. The latter includes a charged device placed at the end of the laparoscope. Both of these are beneficial in their specific requirements but undoubtedly the second one eliminates the first. A ‘fiber optic’ cable with a cold light (halogen or xenon) is also inserted inside the patient’s body through a small hole of approximately 5mm or 10mm. It is done to illuminate the operative field.

How did it evolve?
It is difficult to credit one individual for the existence of laparoscopy operation. It was first performed by George Kelling who did it on a dog in 1902 and then a few years later in 1910 it was experimented on humans by another doctor, named Hans Christian Jacobaeus. The start of computer chip in the operations led to safer and comfortable conclusions. This working of complex laparoscopic procedures freed the involvement of surgeon’s hands in the activity. The view of the operative field on the larger screens helped a team of surgeons to work much more effectively and give out better results. Prior to its conception, laparoscopy was considered to be limited only for diagnosis and performing simple gynecological procedures.
